Colleen AKA Coco
Colleen gave birth to the Sandbox vision way back in the late 1980's, nurtured and babied it, and watched it evolve. It required a lot of devotion and attention, it cried (a lot), but she continued to watch it grow into a successful business. In 2006 a sister store was born in Saskatoon and her vision continues to grow and change (and at times it still cries), only now there are more babysitters. Colleen is best known for rearranging the store, constantly finding space where there is none, and playing practical jokes. She will hide inside a clothing rack for 15 minutes if it means scaring the $&@* out of a staff member. On her days off she "enjoys" rearranging furniture, cleaning cupboards and the garage "OMG I've turned into my mother". Coco is passionate about marketing and helping women to view themselves in a new way. On a personal level she loves collecting a piece of local art from each place she travels. She is inspired by her daughter, fearless, independent, confident, as well as by HGTV. Her husband has forbidden her to take on any further home renovations. She is waiting for him to take a month long trip with his son, he has no idea what she can accomplish in 30 days. Update, he went on the vacation, and she was able to knock down two walls in the kitchen and have a full change underway before he returned. What would be impossible for her to give up? "Enjoying my morning coffee while listening to CBC radio".
Juanita AKA Swanie
Juanita begged Colleen to bring her Sandbox vision to Saskatoon for many years, knowing there was a clear need and want for it. How did she know this? From shopping every spring at Colleen's seasonal store. It was about an overall experience, fun, fashion and family (literally and figuratively). In 2006 the begging stopped and the Sandbox in the city started. Juanita is best known for constantly singing, dancing, cackling and talking in various dialects ie. Yoda speak. She loves hanging out at the dressing rooms, taking delight in telling customers "see how smart I am" when she chooses something a customer would have never chosen on their own. She loves colour, floral patterns, dresses and black for basics. She sees herself as a Wardrobe Wizard and Spanx Spokeswoman, and speaks passionately to her customers about these topics (they sometimes call her bossy, but in a good way). With her free time Juanita enjoys napping with her pooch kiki, staying in touch with friends, listening to music and soaking up the sun. She has always received knowledge and insight from Oprah, but in general gains inspiration from people and stories that cross her path every day, and tries to put herself in their shoes. She strives to incorporate bits and pieces of traits she admires in others into her own life. Resilience from her daughter Megan, focus from her sister Colleen, patience from her mom Liz, the list goes on and on. When posed the question, what could you not live without? She responded "coffee, covergirl ice blue pink lipstick ( which she has stocked for the next decade) and a hot bath."
Megan AKA Smeagol
Megan has been with our team since we opened our Saskatoon location in November 2006. She is known for her spunky, chatty, and upbeat personality,. You can't miss her! She is so proficient at reorders that she sometimes reorders the reorder before the first reorder even arrives. Megan also babysits the store while the bosses are away at buying markets or on holidays. A self professed Jean Genie, she also possesses a knack for edging people comfortably out of their comfort zone. When she's not at work or sleeping, it is important for her to be productive. Whether it's making jewellery, cooking, cleaning (can't live without her Dyson vacuum), playing with her dog Annie, or practising songs for her new band, Megan is always on the go. Her Grandma Liz is one of her biggest inspirations, teaching her to appreciate the simple things in life and offering many words of wisdom, such as "drop him like a hot potato". They even have matching tattoos. Ever aware of people in need, Megan can be found donning her Ms. Santa Claus garb, ringing bells and singing carols for The Salvation Army each Christmas season.
Chelsea AKA ChelsA
Chelsea joined our team in March of 2007. Standing at 6 feet tall she is frequently called upon to grab and hold things off the hard to reach areas at any given moment. Till and pricing master would probably be at the top of her resume, followed by model, unpacker, secretary, dressing room advisor and any other little jobs needing to be tackled. She definitely runs. In her spare time, Chelsea likes to relax, watch Netflix (perhaps with a big bag of salt and vinegar chips) and play with her dog Eevee and cat Sox, her “fur” children. She is passionate about singing and dancing, which is why anyone who can perform on stage are people that she admires and looks up to. Chelsea is a part of a choir and was involved in The Saskatoon Children’s Choir for many of her childhood years. When asked what she couldn't live without she replied “I’m not really a materialistic person, well maybe with my phone and texting, I kind of rely on that"
Talia AKA Nadia
Talia has been with our team since April of 2011. Super shy and reserved (at first), she has become a superhero in the realms of finding clothing flaws, detecting grammar errors, return authorizations, till balancing, and organization of anything she can get her hands on. WHEW!! On her days off, Talia loves to shop, lounge with her two cats, Calypso and Cairo, and organize her room. Is there a common theme here? She has a true passion for fashion, which shows in the fun and quirky way she likes to dress; each piece chosen very thoughtfully. Talia gets inspiration from the ideologies that superheroes in comics represent: good versus evil and doing the "right thing”, no matter what the personal cost is. Go, Spider-Man! Talia is a true realist, but with a whimsical twist. Three things she refuses to never lower her standards about are boys, clothes, and coffee. Well said, Nadia, well said!
Samantha AKA Sammy
Sam was interviewed and hired after our interviews were already completed. Glad we made an exception, she's been with us since March 2011. Whenever anything creative is required, Sam is our artist on demand, or as she has aptly named herself an "artistic genius". We concur. Along with creating displays, her other long list of strengths are modelling, styling(photos and mannequins) and dressing women, she has a keen eye for pulling out women's personalities through clothing. When Sam is not working she can be found on the slopes, snowboarding with pals, heading to the family cabin, attending concerts, or taking ballet classes. She is the social butterfly of our crew, always looking for the next adventure. Graduating from the Academy of Fashion design, it's no wonder she is most passionate about fashion, art, music and everything Vintage. If you ever see Sam, it's approximately 100% likely she will have red lipstick and high heels on. Those two things, plus coffee are imperative for getting through her day. Bob Dylan's songs and lyrics give her inspiration because he has no fear, always stays true to himself, and is always changing. What could be better than that?
JAMIE AKA JAMIE
Jamie is the latest addition to our Sandbox crew, hired in the fall of 2015. A complete departure from her former work life, she was wanting to take on a new and more interactive challenge, which we admired. One of her daily mantras is "Baby steps, baby steps", when she wants to "know" how to do everything right now. Jamie is the Queen of Clean, when not at the dressing rooms, greeting people, or helping out in the back room, Jamie can be seen on the retail floor with one of several cleaning tools in hand. She may have Swiffer dusters instead of hands!! "Jamie Swiffer hands".
When not at the Sandbox,Jamie loves spending time with her new grandchild, Londyn, getting dirt under her fingernails from gardening, and travelling the world with Anthony Bourdain. She gains inspiration from her daughters Dayna and Delanie, strong intelligent and supportive women who keep her young(ish)."While we try to teach our children about life, our children teach us what life is about".People that show up everyday and give 100%,despite adversity!!When asked what she couldn't live without, she responded ,music. "Louder the better. How else could you vacuum or do a road trip? Definitely coffee - don't even look @ me til the cup is in my hand in the morning, black n bold. Fruit. Will request it on my deathbed. And wine lol."
